‘Better Late Then Never’ by Evkoz

I gave Evkoz a whole bunch of DVDs for this weekend while he was alone in his house, and he watched all but one of them, and I’m still waiting on that one, he needs to watch it and write me another review. Along with what he wrote I’ll also put in my two cents as well and give my own mini review. I have my own opinion on these films as well as him.

Here we go:

The first one is the House MD DVD, this is the hit Fox television show that is actually on tonight and I will be watching and knowing my parents they always tend to call me when I’m watching my beloved show and they always end up asking “are you ok?” to which I respond “yes, but I’m watching House…”

Here is Evkoz’s review:

House-Season 1
DVD

House is as addicting as cigarettes. The series takes a closer look at medical cases, putting interesting spins on ordinarily boring medical conditions and characters. The characters are well defined and acted. Whether you’ve started to view the series from the first episode or the most current, you quickly become accustomed to what’s happening. House, the main character, is an arrogant, insincere, inpatient, and egotistical doctor. Although he’s always right, it’s interesting to see his thought process and how those around him deal with his personality—or lack, thereof.

I like Evkoz’s Scores, shows the true teacher in him, will I use his scoring technique? No, I wasn’t born a teacher I was born a writer and a filmmaker (well, storyteller is the term I prefer to use, so…) I agree, in fact, this may be the only one I agree with completely. Great show, love it, and to use an analogy, like pizza and sex, even when its bad, its good.

Here’s my rating: 10 out of 10 (I tend to rate everything according to my top three movies, which I guess would be:

1. Pirates of the Carribean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
2. The Rock
3. Total Recall

I’ve tried very hard to come up with a Top Five, but I always second guess myself. I think the top three have a great combination of Action, Comedy, Sci-Fi, Adventure, and Drama; all the elements of films that I love. And when rating anything against these three movies its always hard to get a 10 out of 10, but house, one of my favorite current television shows definately gets a 10 out of 10).

Next on the Evkoz plate was Deuce Bigalow-European Gigolo; I own the first movie on DVD, I enjoyed it when I saw it, it is in no way a classic nor is it the greatest movie in the world. It doesn’t even come close to a good movie. Its an ok movie and I find it entertaining, but in a I’ll watch it once every five years type of entertaining, if I remember I even own it. I keep it mostly because it, along with Spaceballs, were giving to me as a graduation gift from Evkoz and a bunch of high school friends. I have never seen the second one, so I am going on what Evkoz has written below:

Deuce Bigalow-European Gigolo
DVD

If you enjoyed the first movie, Deuce Bigalow, you will most likely enjoy the sequel. Rob Schneider returns with Eddie Griffin, as Deuce travels to Amsterdam to clear his favorite Pimp from murder charges. While the movie had its comedic moments, the first movie was much funnier. At times, the script is repetitive and just uses the same jokes over and over. Much like other sequels, it doesn’t live up to what you’d expect.

I spoke to Evkoz before he sent me the review and what he said and what he put here seem like two different things, he hated the movie, and he was a little nice here. I don’t know why…maybe he felt bad…

Next up we have Transporter 2, I actually own the first one, but have never seen it, I accidentally own it, while interning at Pinsonault Associates I borrowed the DVD a day before I found out that my internship was ending, forgot I had the DVD and found it months later when I was moving out of the dorms. So I still have it, I have heard nothing but great reviews about it, but I have never gotten around to watching it.

Here is Evkoz’s review:

Transporter 2

Jason Statham returns in yet another sequel. Although the first in the series was somewhat better, Transporter 2 delivers in all areas—writing, action, acting, and creativity. There’s a clearly defined plot and you are not lost. Parts of the story are predictable. Nevertheless, the action, fight, and chase sequences are well staged and choreographed. Intertwined throughout the action is a bit of comedy. If you enjoyed the original, you will most certainly enjoy the sequel.

I will say this, from the comercials, I noticed a scene where the main character is fending off some bad guys (or thugs rather) and he is using martial arts with a hose (along with the nosil on the hose) and kicking ass with it. To see where this was first used refer back to Romeo Must Die staring Jet Li. I used to own it, but sold it to the now closed Compact Disc World on Rt. 10 across the street from Wendy’s.

Mission: Impossible 2 is up next, Evkoz hated this film and there aren’t many people who liked it because they were expecting a straight up action movie. Here is his review:

Mission Impossible 2
(MI: 2)

To be completely honest, I did not like this movie. Out of 2 hours, it was the last 30-45 minutes of the movie that I somewhat got interested. While in true MI fashion there was a solid plot, I felt it took a long time for the story to make sense and actually “go somewhere.” Once again, the first movie in the series is much better. Tom Cruise, Thandie Newton (of ER fame), and Ving Rhames (who, no matter what, does a great job) all add star power. However, even they couldn’t save this movie. Apparently, writing a script is Mission: Impossible.

If you go in understanding John Woo and knowing that he wanted to make this a love story and not so much an action movie you will understand what a John Woo movie is. Face/Off was clearly the best American example of a John Woo movie, slow motion shots to emphasis something, the spinning around a person in a fluid motion similar to ballet in an action movie, the white doves that are in every Woo film to show the end of something, either the end of the movie or the death of the bad guy.

This will be the only one that I don’t agree with at all and I’ll use Evkoz’s scores to help with this:

Writing: B
Acting: A
Overall B+

I couldn’t give it an A or even A-, I’ve always appreciated this movie and understood it from a film perspective and not a casual viewer, I understand that all the M:I movies do not connect, save for the characters (Ethan Hunt and Luther) and that they are meant to be made by different directors with different visions.

My rating on this would be 7 out of 10.

And finally, for now, The Island:

The Island

After reading the back of the DVD case, you believe you are about to see a great movie. How can you go wrong with Scarlett Johansen? I can’t think of a way? Well, in this case—they did. The only positive aspects of this movie are the visual effects, photography, in addition to the action scenes. Other than that, I wouldn’t recommend it.

Scores:
Writing: C-
Acting: C
Overall: C-

I think people went into this movie expecting amazing and didn’t realize that it wasn’t supposed to be like that. Michael Bay (Bad Boys, The Rock, Armageddon, Pearl Harbor, Bad Boys II) tends to get very over the top, especially with his last two movie before this. Bad Boys II wasn’t nearly as good as Bad Boys, but for different reasons, its a good movie, but not if you are a fan of the first one. Bad Boys definately needs a third movie to finish itself off as a trilogy or something. The Island, I felt was a good movie. I think the acting was good, great actors, great story, it just wasn’t an amazing movie. It was a good movie. And nothing more. I’ve seen it about three times and I think its a great addition to the Bay movies, but its definately apart of the last three of the Bay films, in the mediocre at best. I’ve seen worse movies, I’ve seen things that I’d rate as 2 or 3 on a scale of 10 this one is not one of them.

Rating: 7 out of 10

Well, that’s it for this edition of ‘Better Late Then Never’ I hope to see more of them soon, Evkoz still has to give me an I, Robot review.

Ooh, I actually saw “I, Robot”. Am interested in what you guys think of it.

Oh crap, I’ve got Ethan Ross. I need to put the DVD box somewhere in my way so that I actually watch it, I’m getting really, really bad at this. Sorry, Marcos.

  2. socramforever says:

What did you think of I, Robot, why don’t you write up a review and send it to me, I’ll post it as another columnist on the blog…whoo!!!

  3. socramforever says:

yeah…just guess…guess as to what you think it would be and maybe I’ll still be alive by then…

    😛

  4. flammable says:

Hmm, might be the theme you’re using? That’s kinda strange.

Apparently LiveJournal is making more themes, you might want to check out the other ones they’ve got…there might be a couple that have link lists or something.

  5. socramforever says:

eh, its ok, if I find something else that’s cool, I’ll post it and remove one of the stupid ones I put there to fill space.

  6. flammable says:

I hope you’re not referring to mine? LOL

I just thought of something! If you make a new post, then set the date of the post to some date that’s far into the future (I’d say at least 2050), then it’ll stick to the top of the blog. You could fill that with links.

  7. socramforever says:

    you can do that?

isn’t that like predicting the future? or creating a time machine?

no, seriously, you can do that?

  8. socramforever says:

its like a wine spill on the carpet…it stays there forever….I mean I’ve been trying to like it all night to get it out, its just not budging…stupid stubborn stain!

  9. flammable says:

Yup, you can do that…you can make a post with a date in the future, and it will sticky it to the top of the blog.

  10. flammable says:

Never tried it myself, but I remember reading about the feature when I used LiveJournal all of the time.

It’ll only go away when you reach the date, so if you make the post date a month from now, it’ll fall from the top in a month. If you make it 10 years from now, in 10 years, you’ll just need to change the date or something.

  11. socramforever says:

    GRRRRRRRRR

    RIP, RIP, RIP,

    TUG, TUG, TUG

    GRRRRRRRRR

    YANK, YANK, YANK

    GRRRRRRRRR

    BITE, BITE, BITE

    GRRRRRRRRR

***lies down and gasps for air***

  12. socramforever says:

that’s weird…I don’t think I like it…its like something out of back to the future or something…

  13. socramforever says:

ohh! this is true…and how awesome would it be if hoverboards actually did exist…although I never did learn to ride a skate board, so knowing my luck I’d fall off of a hoverboard too…

  14. flammable says:

Same here, but…maybe they also have those things that were in the Matrix that let you instantly know how to do something. Like ride a hoverboard.

  15. socramforever says:

ohh! you have no idea how much I want that. to have an entire life experience and teachings downloaded into your mind. You’ll be a genius in no time.
