A third Ventura movie?

And why I fear the making of it…

Morgan Creek has hired Jeff Sank and brothers Jason and Justin Heimberg to write a third installment of the hit franchise “Ace Ventura” says The Hollywood Reporter.

The two previous “Ventura” comedies — 1994’s “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective” and the following year’s “Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls” — grossed more than $180 million domestically and helped establish Jim Carrey as one of the highest-paid comedy actors in Hollywood.

The latest pet project is expected to center on the eccentric detective’s son, who steps into his father’s shoes to take over the family business.

We’ve seen all of the good Jim Carrey movies get horrible sequels. All the movies have tried to cash in on the fact that they are a sequel to a movie that came out ten years earlier. Scary thought…those movies include: Dumb and Dumber (the prequel: Dumb and Dumber-er: When Harry Met Lyod), The Mask (The Son of the Mask), Bruce Almighty (Evan Almighty–though this one might be good with Steve Carrell in it) and now this one.

I loved the first one when I was younger and I didn’t appreciate the second one until recently and realized that it needs to be looked at not as a sequel but as another chapter in the story of Ace (kind of like James Bond). Both movies are modern classics and I would hate to see them ruined because some company wants some quick cash.

I don’t think its a good idea and it will only hurt the series. Either leave it as is with just Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls or don’t do it at all. Make a sequel with Jim Carrey, but don’t make one without him or it will crash and burn like the rest of them all have.

Now, if they do get him to make the movie, don’t get a son involved, no one ever cares about the kids, they want the original. I think we deserve a third Ace movie, or we would be happy with just the two that came out…I’m fine with the two and I don’t see Jim Carrey coming back to a character that he did over a decade ago. He’s the type that likes to leave things behind and move on and that’s what I recommend them to do with this movie.
