MGM chairman-CEO Harry Sloan is moving the studio aggressively into the tentpole business with two or three big-budget releases a year reports Variety.

Over the next few years, MGM is planning to release half a dozen films, some in the $150 million to $200 million-plus range. Studio is ready to unveil such high-profile projects as “Terminator 4”; one or two installments of “The Hobbit,” which Sloan hopes will be directed by Peter Jackson; and a sequel to “The Thomas Crown Affair” with Pierce Brosnan.

The studio has already announced a “Pink Panther” sequel and the next 007 pic “Bond 22,” due out in November 2008. “Rocky Balboa” unspools in February.

Sounds cool. I wouldn’t mind a sequel to the Termintor franchise (with or without Arnold at this point would be fine…as long as someone major like a Rock or Vin Disel is in it). The Hobbit should be just one movie and I couldn’t see anyone other then Peter Jackson doing it, so if he doesn’t do it, consider it a failure on the part of MGM.

Very much so…they should have secured Peter Jackson *before* announcing The Hobbit. I believe Jackson said he’d do The Hobbit, but he’s got other things to do first. If the studios are rushing him, they’re going to lose.

Agreed, T4 could include anyone else, really, and it wouldn’t matter so much. Actually, I’d rather see someone else, but then again, I haven’t seen any of the Terminator movies (more than a few snippets – I know the basic plot by now).

Glad they still have Pierce Brosnan, but he should be in a Bond movie. ‘Nuff said.
