Naomi Watts will star opposite Tom Hanks in Ron Howard’s “Angels & Demons,” the prequel to “The Da Vinci Code” reports The New York Post.

In “Angels,” Robert Langdon (Hanks) tries to solve a murder and unravel a plot by an ancient group, the Illuminati, to blow up the Vatican during a papal conclave.

Watts would take on the role of Vittoria Vetra, daughter of the physicist Leonardo Vetra who’s death kicks off the investigation.

Still to be cast are the key roles of Maximilian Kohler, the director of the mega-rich think tank CERN; Camerlengo Carlo Ventresca, the late pope’s aide who holds office until the new pope is elected; the various members of the Vatican Swiss Guard; and the Illumanati Hassassin.

‘Angels’ was delayed late last week due to the writers strike and will hit theaters on May 15th 2009.

Ok, I’m ok with this. Naomi Watts is a blonde actress and I always saw Vittoria as a long hair brunette, but with wigs and all its all good. I can see her as the part. Another good actress in a good role.

PS On a side note, I’m disappointed to find out that Naomi Watts will not be plan the Narcissa Malfoy in the Harry Potter movies, I thought her blonde hair would have been perfect for the role. But we’ll see how it all plays out…
