Thursday, June 18th, 2009

I thought I posted this a long long time ago (according to my saved file, it was back on April 10th that I saw this). This is the next Dan Brown book, coming out September 15th. I won’t be waiting for this one to be a Christmas present. This is the third Robert Langdon novel that Dan Brown has written. I can’t wait.

New York, NY (April 20, 2009) Dan Brown’s new novel, the eagerly awaited follow-up to his #1 international phenomenon, The Da Vinci Code, which was the bestselling hardcover adult novel of all time with 81 million copies in print worldwide, will be published in the U.S. and Canada by Doubleday on September 15, 2009.

The Lost Symbol will have a first printing of 5 million copies, and it will once again feature Dan Brown’s unforgettable protagonist, Robert Langdon. The announcement was made today by Sonny Mehta, Chairman and Editor in Chief of the Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group.

“This is a great day for readers and booksellers,” said Mehta.”The Lost Symbol is a brilliant and compelling thriller. Dan Brown’s prodigious talent for storytelling, infused with history, codes and intrigue, is on full display in this new book. This is one of the most anticipated publications in recent history, and it was well worth the wait.”

Brown’s longtime editor, Jason Kaufman, Vice President and Executive Editor at Doubleday said, “Nothing ever is as it first appears in a Dan Brown novel. This book’s narrative takes place in a twelve-hour period, and from the first page, Dan’s readers will feel the thrill of discovery as they follow Robert Langdon through a masterful and unexpected new landscape. The Lost Symbol is full of surprises.”

“This novel has been a strange and wonderful journey,” said Brown. “Weaving five years of research into the story’s twelve-hour timeframe was an exhilarating challenge. Robert Langdon’s life clearly moves a lot faster than mine.”

The audio version of The Lost Symbol will be published in North America in September by Random House Audio.

The Da Vinci Code, published by Doubleday on March 18, 2003, spent 144 weeks on The New York Times Hardcover Fiction bestseller list, 54 of them at #1—the position at which it debuted. The novel has been translated into 51 languages.

The film of The Da Vinci Code was a #1 box office smash when it was released by Columbia Pictures in May 2006 with Ron Howard directing and Tom Hanks starring as Robert Langdon. Box office receipts were $758 million. The same team will release Angels and Demons theatrically worldwide on May 15, 2009.

Following the publication of The Da Vinci Code, Dan Brown’s earlier novels, Digital Fortress, Deception Point and Angels and Demons have all gone on to become multi-million copy international bestsellers.

The Lost Symbol will be published in the U.K. on September 15th by Transworld Publishers, a division of The Random House Group who has published all of Brown’s novels.

Dan Brown is represented by Heide Lange at Sanford J. Greenburger Associates, Inc.

Pirate Latitudes by: Michael Crichton

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

After posting the last entry about Jurassic Park, I type Michael Crichton’s name into google to see if his website was still up and if they had any news about any potential publishing of works that he may have been working on. Sure enough, Pirate Latitudes is coming out this Fall! November 24, 2009. Ohh man! Add this to my 2009 Christmas list!

Pirate Latitudes:

Hardcover
To Be Published November 24, 2009
by HarperCollins
320 pages
Discovered among Crichton’s files after his passing last fall, Pirate Latitudes is an adventure tale unlike anything Crichton readers have seen before. Demonstrating the versatility and raw storytelling power of this master of suspense, it is sure to generate tremendous reader interest and media coverage.

The Caribbean, 1665. A remote colony of the English crown, the island of Jamaica holds out against the vast supremacy of the Spanish empire. Devoid of London’s luxuries, Port Royal, its capital, is a cutthroat town of taverns, grog shops, and bawdy houses. In this steamy climate, life can end swiftly by dysentery—or dagger. But for a daring soul like Captain Edward Hunter, this wild outpost in the New World can also lead to great fortune, if he abides by the island’s code. In the name of His Majesty King Charles II of England, gold in Spanish hands is gold for the taking and the law of the land rests with those ruthless enough to make it.

Word in port is that the Spanish galleon El Trinidad, fresh from New Spain, is awaiting repairs in nearby Matanceros. Heavily fortified, the impregnable Spanish harbor is guarded by the bloodthirsty Cazalla, a favorite commander of King Philip IV. With the Jamaican governor’s backing, Hunter assembles a crew of ruffians to infiltrate the enemy island and commandeer the galleon and its fortune in Spanish gold. The raid is as perilous as the bloodiest tales of Matanceros legend, and Hunter will lose more than one man before he makes it onto the island’s shores, where dense jungle and the firepower of Spanish infantry stand between him and the treasure.

With the help of his cunning band, Hunter hijacks El Trinidad and escapes the deadly clutches of Cazalla, leaving plenty of carnage in his wake. But the danger—and adventure—are only just beginning. . .

Apparently, there is another book coming out in 2010…I’m so excited.

Jurassic Park 4: Extinct?

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

I had a feeling that once they didn’t get this one moving after the third one came out, back in 2001, that it probably was never going to happen. Also, what with writer/creator Michael Crichton having passed away along with special effects/make-up artist Stan Winston also passing away last year, both of which worked on the Jurassic project, I didn’t see this one coming through at all.

Another one from moviehole.net:

Jurassic Park 4 extinct, says producer

Author: Clint Morris    Date: Wednesday, June 17th, 2009 Time: 1:08 am

You kids can stop crafting those mock “Jurassic Park 4” posters in PhotoShop – because the film is unlikely to ever happen, thus, there won’t be any fansites wanting your rapidly-produced homemade one sheets.

Producer Frank Marshall tells io9 that the once-as-good-as-greenlit fourth installment has been put on the back-burner, adding that it’s a “long-shot” in terms of it ever happening.

More likely to come to fruition is Marshall’s remake of Wolfgang Peterson’s “NeverEnding Story”.

Chris Nolan not directing third Batman?

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

This may be a little premature seeing that no one really knows what is going on with the project just yet. Personally I say wait until he’s done with his next movie, he did shoot The Prestige right after Batman Begins came out, so you never know, he may just want to tackle it on its own. He seems to be the type of director that handles one film project at a time. Besides, moving on without him would be stupid, he’s the mastermind behind the resurgence of the Batman movies.

from moviehole.net:

Nolan not returning for Batman 3?

Is Christopher Nolan clearing his stuff out of the Batcave?

Author: Clint Morris    Date: Wednesday, June 17th, 2009 Time: 2:08 am

A trusted industry source tells Batman-On-Film.com that Nolan, helmer of “Batman Begins” and “The Dark Knight“, might not be returning for the foreseeable third film in the bank-busting series. And considering Nolan has been taking his time in agreeing to a third film (though some say the “Interception” agreement enclosed a promise from the filmmaker that he’d also give them a third “Batman“), that’s probably easier to believe than we’d like it to be.

It’s understandable the guy probably feels he’ll never top “The Dark Knight” – because most of us feel the same way. It can’t… won’t… be topped. There has to be a reason, besides cabbage, for the guy to come back. Even Christian Bale feels the same way. He’s not a sure thing either. Obviously the talent, and the WB have different reasons for doing another – though I don’t doubt they’d like to make a good film, Benjamin’s are their first priority – and if I was a betting man, I’d say lay some chips down on the studio putting this into production before Nolan and Bale are ready to go.

But if Nolan doesn’t want to return, it’s fair enough. After all, he’s a director who likes to do original, fresh stuff, so two films set in Gotham City may be enough for him. It was for Tim Burton.

But according to the site, the main reason why Nolan is reluctant to sign on involves Heath Ledger… and the Joker.

Ledger’s death rocked Nolan so much that he reportedly decided then-and-there that “Dark Knight” would be his last Batman movie. And also, says the site, Warner wants to have The Joker back in the third film (as Moviehole told you last year) – and Nolan, understandably, isn’t keen on that. And who can fuckin’ blame him!?

It’s absolutely ridiculous to even consider recasting the role.

Scribe David Goyer told me a couple of years ago that the plan was – remember, Heath Ledger was still alive at the time – to have The Joker AND Harvey Dent appear in both ‘’The Dark Knight” AND the film that followed it. I think it goes without saying that the plans to carry the characters over to a second film were abandoned when Ledger passed away. And from what I’ve heard, with the passing of Ledger, he treatment for the third film has all but been tossed out.

Still…I don’t doubt Warner are considering bringing The Joker back – and trying to get someone liker a Depp or a Bettany – for the next film, if even to make a small appearance, but it’s the wrong way to go. They need to let the character rest now.

So, if this is true, and Nolan isn’t keen on doing another “Batman” movie, where-to?

Well, according to the site, it means the Batman franchise is “back to square one”. That means, anything’s possible – a “Batman Vs. Superman” film could happen, a “Batman : Year One” could be discussed, or – god forbid – Joel Schumacher may sequelize “The Dark Knight”, whacking some nips on new Batman, Colin Farrell. Fuck, maybe they’ll even do a prequel to the prequel… with a 14-year-old Bruce Wayne losing his cherry to that slut Poison Ivy.

But look, this is just scuttlebutt at the moment, and Nolan hasn’t officially ruled out directing the film.. but fuck, what a frightening hypothetical, hey!?

Surely not… right? right!?

2012 trailer

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

If the movie is as good as this trailer, I don’t think director (writer) Roland Emmerich will ever be able to top this one.
