Disney Marvel buy update

Monday, August 31st, 2009

I just glanced at Comingsoon.net and they had three updates from a conference call between Disney and Marvel earlier today and they had the following to say.

from comingsoon.net:

UPDATE #1: In a conference call, the companies said that the deals for movies for characters at other studios (Spider-Man, X-Men, etc.) will stay in place under the terms set by Marvel and the other studios.

UPDATE #2: John Lasseter met with Marvel last week about a possible team-up between Marvel and Pixar and got “pretty excited, pretty fast.” They say there’s definitely an opportunity there.

UPDATE #3: The deal with Paramount Pictures to distribute “Iron Man 2,” “Thor,” “Captain America” and “The Avengers” stays in place as well, but Disney would like to self-distribute down the line. “When the time comes we’ll take a closer look at it.”

Hmmm, Pixar and Marvel? Sounds interesting. Perhaps a Incredibles team up with some Marvel characters?

Disney buys Marvels for 4 billion?

Monday, August 31st, 2009

I don’t know about the average person, but I think this is huge. I mean, Time Warner owns the DC comic universe and now Disney will own the Marvel Universe? I just hope this doesn’t mean that we’ll see Spiderman saving Mickey Mouse in the next movie? Although, a lot of the Marvel properties are distributed by other companies, Spiderman by Sony, Hulk by Universal, X-men by Twentieth Century Fox, so I don’t really know how it’ll all work, but that’s a huge coup for Disney, even if it didn’t need Marvel, both brands, in my opinion stand to gain more from the buy out.

Disney to buy Marvel for $4 billion

Deal requires antitrust review

By LEO BARRACLOUGH

The Walt Disney Co. has agreed to acquire Marvel Ent. in a stock and cash transaction worth $4 billion.

Under the terms of the deal, Marvel shareholders would receive $30 per share in cash plus approximately 0.745 Disney shares for each Marvel share they own. Based on the closing price of Disney stock on Friday, the transaction value is $50 per Marvel share or approximately $4 billion.

Under the deal, Disney will acquire ownership of Marvel including its more than 5,000 Marvel characters.

The boards of both companies have approved the pact, which is subject to antitrust review and the approval of Marvel shareholders.

“This transaction combines Marvel’s strong global brand and world-renowned library of characters including Iron Man, Spider-Man, X-Men, Captain America, Fantastic Four and Thor with Disney’s creative skills, unparalleled global portfolio of entertainment properties, and a business structure that maximizes the value of creative properties across multiple platforms and territories,” said Robert A. Iger, Mouse House prexy and CEO.

Bad Boys 3 has a screenwriter

Monday, August 31st, 2009

I remember when Bad Boys II came out that they had already started talking about making a third one, but its honestly no surprise to me that nothing would have been written or worked on in the six years since the second one came out. That usually happens when a sequel like this comes out. They aren’t cheap to make, like a horror movie is, and they need some time to sit before someone realizes they actually have a franchise that’s been untouched.

Columbia Hires Bad Boys 3 Screenwriter

August 31, 2009

Columbia Pictures is developing a third installment of the “Bad Boys” franchise, hiring Peter Craig to write the screenplay, says The Hollywood Reporter.

The studio hopes to have a script that would reunite director Michael Bay, producer Jerry Bruckheimer and stars Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. At this point, with the project in the early stages, none has a deal to return.

The first Bad Boys was released in 1995 and grossed $66 million domestically and $141 million worldwide. The 2003 sequel grossed $138 million domestically and $273 million worldwide.

A Terminator officially enters Dollhouse

Thursday, August 27th, 2009

Had a little too much caffeine today, so I’m, what I believe I just coined but probably didn’t, Wired Tired; I’m so awake but very tired at the same time. They don’t counter each other out.

I had posted about this back in May, which you can view by clicking here, but this is good news. I’m glad that Summer Glau is back on Fox, on Friday nights. Hopefully this show doesn’t get canceled. I loved Terminator. I’m still upset they canceled it.

Thursday, August 27th, 2009

Our pumpkin, that we didn’t plant, is all grown up! Its fully orange and we don’t know what to do with it just yet. Its a little to early to pluck and carve, its not even September yet.

But, it does look like we’ll be getting another pumpkin too, not too far away from the first one is a little one beginning to grow!

Speilberg to work on Michael Crichton’s Pirate Latitudes

Thursday, August 27th, 2009

This is really exciting. I always felt that Speilberg and Crichton were the best combo to make memorable movies, just look at Jurassic Park! Even The Lost World: Jurassic Park was memorable, at least compared to Jurassic Park III. I think the other films based on Crichton’s novels have fallen by the wayside (I mean even Congo, which is a guilty pleasure, but a movie I don’t mind seeing, wasn’t as good as Jurassic Park) in terms of quality.

When I posted on the blog back in June about Michael Crichton’s Pirate Latitudes coming out in November, I was pretty excited. Now this news just blows me away!

Spielberg to Develop Crichton’s Pirate Latitudes

Source:USA Today
August 27, 2009

pirateUSA Today reports that Steven Spielberg is developing a film out of a posthumously published novel by the late Michael Crichton – “Pirate Latitudes,” an adventure story set off the coast of Jamaica in 1665.

Screenwriter David Koepp, who adapted Crichton’s novels for Jurassic Park and its sequel “The Lost World,” also has signed on to write the script. Spielberg plans to produce and is considering directing, says the newspaper.

DreamWorks Studios describes the novel, set for release Nov. 24, as the story of “a daring plan to infiltrate Port Royal, one of the world’s richest and most notorious cities, and raid a Spanish galleon filled with treasure.”

“It’s a mission movie, and we see it through the prism of what it might have been like to live on the island during that time,” says Stacey Snider, Spielberg’s partner in DreamWorks and the company’s co-chair and CEO.

DreamWorks plans to wait for Koepp’s script before setting any formal schedule for the project. “This is a reunion movie that taps into all three of them, and their love of high adventure. Just like old times,” Snider says.

Maybe some of you Pirates of the Caribbean (POTC)  fanatics are saying “Port Royal! Isn’t that in Pirates?” and if you really need to know, Port Royal did exist and wasn’t just a Disney name added to the franchise. Tortuga also existed too. But in the Disney movie their roles are swapped. Port Royal in POTC is a British colony, lush and regal; while Tortuga is where Pirates go to have fun. In reality, Port Royal seems to be the seedy place where pirates go and Tortuga was fought over by at least three or four countries and was a strong hold.

I’m excited about another Speilberg/Crichton team up. I’m just sad that Crichton isn’t around to see it.

PS For those who will understand this next part, I said it back in June and I’ll say it again now, add Pirate Latitudes by Michael Crichton as the top book in the Book Section of the 2009 Christmas List!
