Paramount Pictures announced today that it is making Mission: Impossible IV. The film, which will be produced by Tom Cruise, J.J. Abrams (Star Trek) and Bad Robot Productions and will star Cruise, will be released Memorial Day weekend 2011.

“Tom and J.J. are great talents and we are excited to be working with them to re-launch this legendary franchise,” said Paramount Pictures Chairman & CEO Brad Grey.

Screenwriters Josh Applebaum and Andre Nemec are attached to write the script, from an original idea by Cruise and Abrams.

The studio, Cruise and Abrams are in now the process of identifying a director for the film. Cruise’s “Mission: Impossible” franchise has grossed over 1.4 billion globally.

Mission: Impossible IV will be co-financed by David Ellison’s Skydance Productions.

The move puts the fourth installment up against The Hangover 2, while Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides opens a week earlier on May 20th.

Really? I thought III was the best out of the bunch, but that’s just my opinion. M:I II was weak, although when I first saw it I thought it was amazing. I’ve heard it bashed in the ten years since it came out and I saw the ending to it recently and my opinion on II has changed, its not so good…

Weirdly enough, I never saw the second one – and that’s the one I wanted to see the most. John Woo! Plus, the soundtrack is badass (I still listen to it).

Saw the third one in theaters because I was visiting FDU and everyone was going, but I wouldn’t have otherwise. It wasn’t bad, just…well, every time Tom Cruise was on screen, I couldn’t help but remember that he’s batshit insane. 😀

This was around the time he was in the headlines for the Scientology stuff, so go figure…maybe it was a better movie than I give it credit.

really? you can’t find it on-line or anything?

listen, you come by my house and you can borrow it anytime…any movie for that matter…anything that you’ve never seen…you can borrow…honestly. All you have to do is find your way to my house. Whatever is in my library of movies is up for you (Mike, I don’t want any strangers coming here looking for a DVD or anything) to borrow….how does that sound?
