Netflix having a hard time with Movie Studios

Cos

I find that anytime I finally get something, it goes away…like, up until today, I thought that earlier this year I got Sirius and Howard was leaving…(if you didn’t see the previous post, he’s re-signed with Sirius). Just when I get into Napster, Metallica pitches a bitch and Napster is removed. I just as I’m getting into Netflix, and getting a good groove on, movie studios are pulling this stuff.

I will say, I do like that ABC is working with Netflix to stream their stuff. I only wish Fox was nice enough to give me their onDemand channel because I’m in the need of watching a whole bunch of House, Fringe and Bones episodes and I don’t really feel like sitting in front of my lap top to watch them.

Here’s one that we all should’ve seen coming sooner. With Netflix and Redbox gnawing away at DVD/Blu-ray sales, the studios have been trying to block access to the newest releases with the well-known 28 day window between release and rental. Now they’re going with another tactic. Their locking renters out from certain portions of the discs.

The first offence came from Disney, who removed English subtitles from UP. Not the biggest deal, unless you’re deaf. Not to be outdone though, Universal Studios has decided to remove all of SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD’s bonus features from Netflix discs, and it appears all other rental discs as well. Take a look at what happens when you try to click on “Bonus Features”:

That’s a bit of a douchey move if you ask me…

In better Netflix news, they reached a new agreement with ABC yesterday to get all the episodes of LOST back on Instant Watch, as well as episodes of a big portion of their other shows. Disney channel shows like PHINEAS AND FERB will now be available for the kids, as well as those shitty tween/teen dramas on ABC family.
