Mortal Kombat Web Series?

Cos

Back on June 8th of last year I posted about the trailer for Mortal Kombat: Rebirth, which was actually a trailer made to sell a new, realistic, film concept to Warner Bros in an attempt to get a feature film made. I will say, being a huge fan of the video game series, I’ve sworn by MK since the first one and I’ve placed it high on my list of favorite fighting games, and while the “trailer” does steer away from the super natural and outlandish elements (what a choice of words when dealing with a series that has another dimension named: Outworld) but chooses to incorporate the characters in the real world. I like this, it seems to be the way films have been going in recent years, with both Batman and James Bond, to name a few, leaping from unrealistic to reality.

For those who didn’t see the trailer back in June, here it is:

Today, I got word from Adam that Dark Horizons posted a page about how the trailer will now be made into a web series and I am pretty excited about that. Perhaps not the greatest venue to showcase what could be a great feature film, it is a way to gain a strong following and get the audience that it needs to break into the mainstream once again. Besides, being a web series does give it some freedoms that a film wouldn’t…hopefully this will lead to some HBO, Showtime or even Starz series…especially seeing that two of the writers from Starz’s Spartacus: Blood and Sand series are involved.

Here is the article from Dark Horizons:

"Mortal Kombat" Short Gets Webisodes

Remember Kevin Tancharoen’s “Mortal Kombat” online short film that was floating around online last year and led to all sorts of excited reaction? The hope was it would lead to another theatrical outing.

That hasn’t turned out to be the case, nevertheless Tancharoen has been commissioned to helm a ten-episode web series along those lines reports Bloody Disgusting.

Tancharoen, Todd Helbing, and Aaron Helbing are penning the series with Michael Jai White leading up the cast as Major Jackson ‘Jax’ Briggs. The characters of Shang Tsung, Liu Kang, Sub Zero, Durak, Kabal, Kitana/Mileena and Scorpion are all expected to be involved.
