“Cowboys & Aliens” Super Bowl Spot

Cos

Here is one that I think the Super Bowl Spot hurt the trailer and/or movie more than it should have. Maybe its the fact that I’m not seeing this is true HD, but I didn’t think the special effects on this TV spot were that good. They felt unfinished or something and that isn’t what you want to show your public. I’ve been looking forward to this movie for a long long time, I even spoke highly of it when I saw the first trailer back on November 17th of last year (Cowboys & Aliens trailer) but this spot just seemed, blah to me…I don’t know. I’m crossing my fingers to see a much better TV spot.

Honestly, if it wasn’t for the potential nude Olivia Wilde by a fire shot that we get to see in this spot, which is literally 2 seconds in length, then this TV spot would have been a complete waste. She pretty much saved it and I doubt we’ll see anymore than what we saw in this spot! But I’m sure it’ll get all the pre-teens and teenagers out to see it. Speaking of Olive Wilde, she seems to be  getting a good push in Hollywood, hopefully this movie does better than Tron: Legacy and if you want to see her in a really good movie that she acted in check out Alpha Dog.

OK, I just watched the Spot a second time and it isn’t horrible, I just don’t like the weird alien skeleton-like flying things. They just seem like odd CG to me. I don’t know.  Once you guys see it does anyone have any thoughts?

Anyway, here is the spot along with an interview with director Jon Favreau who discuss some of the TV Spot, including Olivia’s shot.

Favreau on the Cowboys & Aliens Super Bowl Spot

February 7, 2011
Entertainment Weekly has posted an interview with director Jon Favreau about the Cowboys & Aliens Super Bowl spot, a discussion which may even enter spoiler territory. We’ve posted some highlights and you can view the spot again below as well:
People will be dissecting these 30-second trailers, so tell us up front — what are we not seeing?
JON FAVREAU: We haven’t shown any of the aliens. We want to hold that back. And all the images we’re showing are from the beginning, up to the first half of the film. We’re not showing a lot of where it goes. The first teaser was showing the opening of the film and a little of the setup. This one is showing more of the sense of adventure as things unfold. We’re just trying to get people’s feet wet.

In other words, this is not Wild Wild West.
There’s a level of fun, but that doesn’t mean we have to wink. The characters aren’t having fun, but the audience is. We wanted to maintain the integrity of both genres, and focus on a specific aspect of the alien genre which mostly revolves around the films of the ’80s that I grew up with, and I’m lucky enough to be working with Spielberg (Cowboys & Aliens executive producer), who was the author of many of the films we’re using as inspiration. And sometimes it’s fun to play things as thriller, sometimes verging on horror, like Alien or Aliens. We wanted to maintain that gravity.

And Olivia Wilde, nude by a fire … that’s intriguing.
It is, isn’t it? That’s a moment in the film that may seem out of context, but actually makes a lot of sense in the course of the movie.

People are wondering if she’s an alien.
Because she’s not wearing any clothes?

Well, that … and it seems to be some ritual, and all through the trailer she’s shooting Daniel Craig knowing looks, and seems to be the only cool customer while everyone else loses it. Like she knows something they don’t.
Okay, that’s an interesting theory. You’re the first person who’s asked me that. If it’s making you speculate then it’s doing a good job. But I cannot confirm or deny anything.

I completely agree with what the interviewer with the idea that Olivia’s character is an alien. I don’t know, I’m also confused as to why Daniel Craig’s character has alien hardware on his arm, but I guess those are all questions that will be answered when the movie comes out.

Final thought: Give us a better TV Spot or another trailer to mend the damage the CG work on that alien ship did with this TV Spot.
