RoboCop speaks to Detroit
By Mother Brain

What initially started as a joke has turned into a phenomenon. Back on February 7, an unknown person from Massachusetts sent a tweet to Detroit’s current mayor, David Bing, about erecting a Robocop statue the same way Philadelphia has the Rocky statue. Mayor Bing responded by shooting down the silly suggestion. But it wasn’t long before a Detroit citizen named John Leonard started a social networking movement to get the statue built from public fund. In less than a few weeks, Robocop fans all over the world donated a dollar or more to bring the statue to life. As of this writing, the project has pledged close to $64,000!

Of course with all the hype and online press this story is getting, there’s also a ton of curiosity from the people involved with the original 1987 film about their thoughts on the statue, particular the star and true heart and soul of Robocop, Peter Weller. In recent years, Weller had tried to avoid any Robocop references in interviews which created the presumption that he had grown tired of speaking about it. But then on February 28, Funny or Die released a humorous but fan friendly video of Weller responding about his thoughts on the statue. If you’re a major Robocop fan like I am, this very video will make you feel like a kid again!
