‘Total Recall’ Trailer

Cos

As promised, here is the ‘Total Recall’ trailer for this summer’s (August 3rd) remake/reboot (whatever they want to call it).

First, let’s see it:

Second, let’s discuss it:

Honestly, it looks like they took the original movie and simply added things to it. A lot of the lines and scenes look as if they just took them right out of the first film and decided to “enhance” them. The flying cars look flashy, but we’ve seen that stuff before in ‘The 5th Element’ and ‘Minority Report’ (which, aside from almost actually being the sequel to the original ‘Total Recall’ and also co-staring Colin Farrell, was shot in a very similar fashion–not to mention, ‘Report’ was also based on a Philip K. Dick short as well).

I don’t know, I’m trying to wrap my head around the thought process behind remaking this movie (aside from the obvious, “it’ll make money) it just looks like they added more special effects to an already good movie. They even have Quaid with a mask on that you can see at the end of the trailer, albeit it is a hologram instead of an actual mask like in the original.

I am still against this movie and I am fighting myself, because I want to see it, just for the sheer fact that it is called ‘Total Recall’ but they aren’t giving me any reason to actually WANT to see it; it just looks like the same movie, just updated and with the characters NOT going to Mars.

I did scan the YouTube comments on the page that I got the trailer that was posted above, just to see people’s overall reaction to it and it is mixed. But one person stood out as they said that:

Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE the original, but after reading the Philip K Dick story it’s based on, the Verhoeven movie took liberties with the source material. Quaid is actually Quail and he never travels to Mars. He simply goes on the run on. So really, there is room for multiple interpretations of Philip K Dick’s story. This looks like it will be a a bit of both the novella and the Verhoeven flick.

Which gets me thinking that maybe I should read the short…I’ve always wanted to, and maybe it’ll help me to complete the circle of my love for the original movie.

As it stands right now, I’m still in the middle. I’m not completely unhappy with what I’ve seen, but I’m still curious about the potential that this movie MAY have.

What are your thoughts?
