Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales review: the President’s day edition

Probably the longest title ever on the blog…

Woke up feeling fine this morning. Hoping I can continue feeling good going into this week. Melissa and I watched ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales’ last night. The 5th pirates movie in the series. I’m not going to lie, I found this one to be fun. Great it was not. But I wasn’t offended and hating myself after watching.

No, no, the hating myself after watching was how I felt after the 7 minutes and 44 seconds of watching ‘Turtles: Out of the Shadows’.

Yes, I enjoyed ‘Pirates 5’; didn’t love it. I thought it was the best out of the sequels. However, the first is still the best. Somehow they have never been able to get back to the quality of the first Pirates movie. Something I felt was missing from the 4th movie was more callbacks to the trilogy; this is something they got right with this one. There were enough connections to all four of the previous movies that I felt this film was truly apart of the series.

Starring Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow, there were times I felt he was mailing it in. Javier Bardem plays the film’s villain Captain Salazar who is a cursed Captain that crossed paths with Jack years before and was cursed along with his ship and crew. Orlando Bloom is back as Will Turner along with Geoffrey Rush as Captain Barbosa. Rounding out the cast are Brenton Thwaites and Kaya Scoldelario.

This was the only pirates movie I did not see in the theater. After seeing it on Netflix I’m fine with not going out and seeing it but for some reason feel that they should make a sixth (and final) to completely finish the series.

So, in the end, enjoyed this movie but my recommendation would be to not go out of your way to see it. Find it on either Netflix or wherever you find it.
