Finally…The Rock has come back to Monday Night Raw! And I have to say that even though it was highly speculated that he was going to be there, nothing was ever set in stone so even up until the last moment we didn’t know if it was going to him. Anybody other then him probably would have been an utter disappointment. There were rumors that it would be Bob Barker. I mean come on, that was something thrown in just to get everyone off track. I feel as if even Stone Cold Steve Austin or dare I say even Sting, would have been a complete let down.
And I don’t want that to sound like I’m knocking on Austin, I was and still am a huge Austin mark; I just feel that unlike Austin, who we have seen countless times in WWE over the last couple of years, The Rock is the freshest person to come back. And I don’t think Austin would have demanded the response that Rock did last night. Austin has pretty much become what his t-shirt says: “Arrive. Raise Hell. Leave.” Which is all well and good, but I’ve seen this all before, give us something fresh. And that’s just what The Rock did last night. Watch it:
Unfortunately, I can’t seem to find a good, clean copy of it, this one has some censored words and the one that WWE put out is chopped up into 8 minutes. No reason to just play it, it needs to be viewed in its entirety.
The Rock was the perfect person to come back. Without a shadow of a doubt. He not only came back and had the most massive pop that I believe I’ve heard in a long time; but the sound of every single person in that arena standing up and screaming was something I have not heard since back in the late 90’s into early 2000’s. It was such a loud and continuous ovation for an individual that I don’t even know if anyone was ready for something that loud. If they were in any other city not in a coastal state, I doubt the crowd would have been as loud. Imagine if that had happened at Madison Square Garden? The roof would have flown off!
While watching it live, I did notice that they began to censor The Rock at the very beginning and then they immediately stopped. I hope that Vince takes notices of the response from the crowd and how much the internet wrestling community is all over this and sees the writing on the wall that this is what wrestling should be. Give us characters that we want to see, give us the shows that we want to see. Stop catering to the kiddies and give the fans, the true fans the Entertainment that they so truly feel encompasses their company. They need to give us memorable moments and not what they have been pumping to us over the last few years.
It is a testament to the power that The Rock has that he was able to rip on John Cena, the current face of the company, I couldn’t believe how much they allowed him to go. And the cursing, I was in awe, I felt like I was back in high school or early college watching WWF during the Attitude Era. We need this back. There was more of a sense of realism to it. Every single person in that arena and every single person sitting at home was eating out of the palm of his hand. They don’t make superstars like that anymore. For as much as they want John Cena to be their legendary guy, he isn’t even in The Rock’s league.
I know they are teasing something between Cena and Rock at Wrestlemania. I doubt we’ll get what we want, but I can see there being some sort of an interaction between the two of them and I for one highly look forward to it. This has honestly peeked my interest on Wrestlemania 27 and I’m sure that WWE is hoping that this works in their favor as well.
PS: I do think his theme is slightly different then the last “face” theme that he had and I kind of like it a lot.
PPS I also really like his shirt, “I Bring It” you know they’ve been working on this for quite some time now.
