WWE Doing Away With Elimination Chamber Pay-Per-View?

There is a rumor circulating that the WWE could be doing away with its standard February Pay-Per-View offering Hell in a Cell. Word is that being that there is now only one Heavyweight Championship, the Chamber match is almost a waste to be done in between the Royal Rumble, where a Number One Contender is made, and Wrestlemania, where the Number One Contender gets his shot at the title. I feel that this is a great move and a step in the right direction for the company.

I have watched all of the Monday Night Wars episodes on the WWE Network to date and a word that has come up time and time again is Organically. This is usually used in conjunction with the overexposure of the nWo and how they tried to piece the group back together time and time again but didn’t have the same success of the initial run. The word organic can also be used to describe the WWE Pay-Per-View product as of right now. With Pay-Per-View events such as Hell in a Cell, Money in the Bank, Elimination Chamber, Extreme Rules and Tables, Ladders and Chairs, these matches are pumped out with little to no storyline set-up and they are only performed by the superstars that are currently in the right spot at the time of the event. In the past, the Hell in a Cell match has been reserved to end a major feud. A Tables, Ladders and Chairs match was used to highlight a certain kind of athlete or tag team whose ability to perform added another element to the match itself.  Extreme Rules matches were set for superstars whose feuds called for a violent match to settle a score. The Elimination Chamber match works best when a champion is devoid of contenders, therefore needing someone new to main event major events with, or a number of superstars who can claim to be top contenders for the gold getting a shot all at the same time.

This is a step in the right direction. On the one hand, one of the Hell in a Cell matches coming up at the Hell in a Cell Pay-Per-View Sunday feels organic. Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose have been feuding since the summer and the placement of those men in a Hell in a Cell match makes sense as it is the next step in their feud. On the other hand, John Cena vs. Randy Orton in their second Hell in a Cell encounter have no business being in the cell because their on-again, off-again feud isn’t at all up to the point where the cell needs to be added in the mix.

Here’s hoping that this is a trend that continues. Seeing these matches take place organically during major feuds makes them a lot more interesting. I for one hope that the WWE does away with all of these pay-per-views and adds King of the Ring in its place to determine who gets a title shot at Summerslam. I also hope that Money in the Bank moves back to Wrestlemania where it thrived for so many years. And here’s hoping the next time we see a Tables, Ladders and Chairs match, it is a tag team affair with the likes of the Uso’s, Goldust and Stardust, and maybe Xavier Woods and Kofi Kingston. Now that would be Best for Business.
