Linkin Park: A Thousand Suns

Cos

Facebook’s been on a roll today with putting ads that I would actually be interested in.

I’ve been a fan of Linkin Park since Hybrid Theory came out in 2000(but probably more like 2001 for me. at first I thought they were a Limp Bizkit rip-off, especially with the “L” starting name, mix of Rock and Rap, but) they had a unique style that not that many people enjoyed. I remember my roommate in college, Chris, didn’t like them. I mean, he was more into the Pantera and Slipknot, more heavy metal bands, and he was not interested in the alternative rock like Linkin Park’s earlier albums.

I also find that people still have those feelings about Linkin Park, like Lou, Melissa’s sister’s husband. He can’t stand Linkin Park. When asked if it was between Linkin Park and U2, two bands that he utterly despises, he chose U2. So, that just goes to show you how much he likes Link Park.

I however have always enjoyed Linkin Park. I think their first album (Hybrid Theory) was great, I think their second (Meterora)  was pretty good too. But Minutes to Midnight, their third album,  left a little to be desired. It only had one or two decent songs and they were missing the sound that they had on their earlier albums. I think that was a premeditate decision, they wanted to get back to their rock roots, which is fine. I actually named a script I wrote last summer Minutes to Midnight because I liked the name so much, I also kept playing “Bleed it out” over and over while I was writing. I know it wasn’t the best Linkin Park song, but it got me going and I enjoyed it.

Today I went on facebook and they had an ad  for Linkin Parks A Thousand Suns (which sounds like a cool title–and one that I wouldn’t mind “stealing” or um…borrowing, to write another script…haha!) which gave me a link to hear a portion of the new single “The Catalyst”and I have to say, I’m pretty disappointed. Maybe I need to hear the song from the beginning, but it just sounded like they dropped us right in the middle of some thrown together things. Now, mind you, I only listened to about 30 seconds of it and only once,  and that’s pretty much all I usually give music. I think after 28 years I know if I’m going to like a song or not. I mean, I waited a long time for Metallica’s Death Magnetic and as much as Lou tells me it grew on him, I don’t need a song or album to grow on me. It needs to hit me quick and fast and I need to enjoy the hell out of it on the first and every consecutive time. Same goes for the long gestating Guns N’ RosesChinese Democracy. According to Wikipedia, Chinese Democracy was being worked on from 1999–2008; you mean to tell me that during all those years they couldn’t come up with better shit? Seriously! I mean Axl Rose was pretty much the only true GNR member still there. And that was all they could come up with.

But, who am I? I mean, I’m the only that listens to this stuff right. I consider myself an average person, and shouldn’t that be who they cater too? Not just the super fans, but the people who listen and would like some actual good music put out there. I’m dying for something truly good. Its been a long ass time and I think we need something to come up. I mean, I feel old when I stay true to the early-mid 90’s music like Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots, Sublime, etc…as the last good bits of music…

Anyway, before this post turns into a Sonic the Hedgehog rant, I looked up and did a slight bit of reading about Linkin Park’s A  Thousand Suns (which I keep thinking is called A Thousand Splendid Suns, the book by the author of The Kite Runner, but its not…) and this album is supposed to be a concept album, that will also be “genre-busting.”[7] (I left the footnote in there to show you where I found it). For their sake, I hope so. I know I didn’t like what I heard, but I’ll listen to it when it comes out on September 14, 2010. I hope its good too. If I remember, I’ll try and write a review for it.

Anyway, here is the link I got off of facebook, its a link to iTunes, it actually opens your iTunes and takes you to the iStore for a sampling of the song “The Catalyst”. I don’t know how long the link will work, but, tell me what you think. (And just so you know, I posted the link a few times in that long sentence above, just so that you had multiple times to find the link).

I just hope its good. We need something new to listen too…
