Meet our new child

We’ve been thinking about it for a while, we’ve wanted something around the apartment for quite a bit and we fell in love…

We’ve thought about cats and kittens, hamsters and gerbils, birds and lizards, even bringing our fish tank (more on that one in the next post). We have our girls (Erika and Dale) but we thought the apartment needed something more…so we got this little guy:

Meet our little Netherlands Dwarf Rabbit…Melissa wanted to name it Peanut and I wanted to name it Chewbacca…so we played with the name from Peanut Chewbacca to Peanut Chewie and then I realized that we could call him Peanut Chew…which is a great candy!

Me with Peanut Chew

Melissa with Peanut Chew

The proud parents.

He’s not going to get much bigger than this…he’s like a hobbit to most rabbits.

He’s no playboy bunny…

Hello?

more bunny…

So, we took him to the apartment and did his little cage and went straight to my parents house to show them their new grandson and to show Uncle Mathew his new nephew…at first he didn’t seem to notice Peanut, he was more interested in the cage:

Sniff, sniff…

Curiosity…sniffed the rabbit?

Is this for me?

So we figured that they should meet…Mathew hadn’t noticed Peanut and Peanut didn’t really react to Mathew…and that was an interesting experience…Mathew was a little scaredy cat and moved back when Peanut went to smell him and Peanut hopped away then curiosity set in and he turned around to go play with Mathew and the little grumpy puss took offense to the little bunny’s presence and hissed three times at him and ran away…Peanut didn’t even know what happened he just hopped around:

The first face to face meeting between Cat and Rabbit.

The first sniffs

More sniffing

“… two species separated by 65 million years of evolution, have suddenly been thrown into the mix together. How can we possibly have the slightest idea of what to expect?”
(name the movie this quote came from)

I’m going to eat you!

Unlce and Nephew pose for the camera

Mathew starting to not be able to take the prescence of the new rabbit anymore…30 seconds later he would hiss at the little animal…

So, Melissa and I are now parents to a little dwarf rabbit…come by and check out the little guy!

PS Mathew pleading with the camera to take the little nosey rabbit away…

Congratulations to the proud new parents. I think I need to get you a cigar….~Evkoz

I can’t wait to meet Peanut Chew.

Hey wow, he looks pretty cool. Congratulations. 😀

I think my cat would react in the same way…don’t worry, they’ll both get used to each other. Just keep an eye on them both, especially if it looks like uncle Mathew wants to kiss Peanut Chew.

The quote’s from Jurassic Park, btw. 😉

Thank you, thank you…he’s a great bunny, we let him run around the living room because he can’t hide under anything really.

You’re going to have to come up soon.

Mathew only had one incident with mice over the 20 years that he’s been alive (a little family of four snuck in through one of the basement windows one spring day and he knew about them and chased them) he pretty much earned his keep that two week period. We thought he was loosing his shit. He must have chased them under the stove and they were hiding and he layed down there for about four days without moving. We would pick him up and take him away and he would just run back as fast as he could and stared. When one of them finally came out he took chase after them. And my parents got it into one room in the house so that it wouldn’t sneak away and the cat chased it and then sat down on it and was still looking around the room for it so my parents had to hit him with a broom to move him and they finally caught the mouse. But he would continue to go back to the stove (again we thought he lost his shit, but alas he proved us wrong) and we found another mouse. At this point we called the exterminator and they came in and the second two mice were handled with poison.

Mathew handled his cool this time and only this time.

Mathew then met Bae, Melissa white dog that I think I’ve posted a number of time and that wasn’t a happy experience for the little tumbleweed. I’ve never seen his hair stick so far up, he hissed and ran like he’s never run before. Bae was mostly calm, curious as to what the little animal in front of her was.

Bae, a dog I can understand, but not a little rabbit. Its like I would have figured he would have been interested or even wanting to hit it. But oh well…

Aww…well, hopefully they’ll both warm up to each other soon.

Too bad Mathew’s kind of a grump when it comes to sharing attention…Max is kind of like that, too.
