James Cameron’s first movie since 1997’s Titanic hit theaters this December. He has wanted to do this film for a very long time, but the digital effects were not where he wanted them to be so he simply waited. This film will be in the vein of Polar Express and Beowulf (both movies that I have not seen, both movies were directed by Robert Zemeckis–Back to the Future trilogy, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Forest Gump, Cast Away–just to name a few of his movies). But I’ve never been interested in those, they just seemed too digital.
Avatar was shot with 40% motion capture (meaning they had actors who they were able to capture their motions and input them into a computer to create the characters and 60% digital effects. I’m assuming that Polar Express and Beowulf were both done very similarly. But Avatar looks like it blows away those special effects by a long shot.
