Ohh, I don’t know how I feel about this. I’ve read a bunch of the James Patterson written Alex Cross novels, and unfortunately they’ve gone from good to mediocre to bad. I think they were better back when James Patterson wasn’t pumping out a book every other month, but it happens when money is involved.
In the films (Kiss the Girls and Along Came A Spider) Alex Cross was portrayed by Morgan Freeman, so going into reading the books I had Freeman as my ideal Cross. But once I started reading the novels, you learn that Cross is much younger than Freeman, so I can see why they would, visually, pick Perry. But I don’t know Tyler Perry, outside of the commercials for those “Madea” movies and the cameo he did in Star Trek. I just don’t know if he was the absolute best choice for the role. But we shall see.
From Dark Horizons:
Tyler Perry Is The New Alex Cross
By Garth Franklin Tuesday February 1st 2011 01:09AMMulti-hyphenate Tyler Perry is set to star in “I, Alex Cross”, a reboot of the franchise based on James Patterson’s novel series reports Deadline.
In the book series, Alex Cross is a forensic psychologist who hunts down various killers. Morgan Freeman played the role twice in 1997’s well-regarded “Kiss the Girls” and 2001’s less well-received “Along Came a Spider”.
Perry is best known for writing and directing his own films, this would mark his first role in a film that he didn’t write outside of his cameo in J.J. Abrams’ “Star Trek”.
Rob Cohen (“The Fast and the Furious,” “XXX”) is said to be attached to direct this version which Idris Elba (“The Wire,” “Rocknrolla”) was originally slated to star in.
