Orange is the New Black season 3 quick review

We’ve been fans of the Netflix original series ‘Orange is the New Black’ since it debuted three years ago. The first two seasons were unbelievable, they defined binge watching. Couldn’t stop viewing the show. And in a clear example of how you do something well and you don’t tell anyone, you do something bad and you tell 10 people? Well, there’s a good chance that only about ten of you are going to read this and for that I thank you.

I will keep this as spoiler free as I can.

While this season wasn’t bad, it really felt unfocused. If the first 2 seasons were must watch, I honestly never remembered that we had even started watching an episode when it came down to what we were going to watch at the end of a long day. There was even a three week period of time that we didn’t watch and I didn’t care.

Also, there wasn’t a “big bad” (a term coined up by watching ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ and each season having a specific villain that was deemed the “big bad. Later this would also translate into Dexter for the same reasons). Season 1 Pennsatucky was the “big bad” and in Season 2 it was V. This season was everywhere and no one was really a villain. They had minor little squabbles, there were moments where you thought you knew who the bad guy was going to be. But by episode 8 it was clear that this was going to be one of those in between seasons where the writers didn’t even know where they were going.

Perhaps this was more of an experimental season where they actually gave you more information on a lot of the smaller side characters that we didn’t learn too much about in the past seasons. This focus did make it interesting but I felt like the show was becoming too watered down. I’m hoping that the way this season ends allows for a ton more characters to be introduced to the series next season.

So, I’ll repeat, while not a bad season, it just wasn’t binge worthy enough to make it a top priority. With Season 4 already green lit prior to the debut of the season I’m assuming we should see a much better 4th season debut next June.
