LIVINGSTON — A NJ Transit bus was stolen from outside the Livingston Mall this morning while its driver was taking a bathroom break, authorities said.

The bus, which runs on the #73 line between the mall and Newark, was taken from the mall’s parking lot at about 7:30 a.m., said Dan Stessel, a spokesman for NJ Transit.

The driver, who was on a layover prior to starting the return trip to Newark, walked out of the mall’s restroom to find the bus gone. It was recovered roughly 25 minutes later, parked four miles away in the area of the Turtle Back Zoo in West Orange, Stessel said.

The bus was undamaged and empty, he said. A search is now underway for the thief.
