“Avatar” Overtakes “Titanic” At Box-Office

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

This is something I figured wouldn’t happen for a long long time, but if it was going to happen, I’m not surprised that it was James Cameron that was able to achieve this…

It hasn’t overtaken Titanic in the U.S., but I’m sure that’ll happen within the next week or two…I bet Avatar makes it to 2 billion…

Avatar Tops Titanic at the Worldwide Box Office

After just 39 days in theaters, James Cameron’s Avatar surpassed Cameron’s own Titanic on Monday, January 25th at the worldwide (U.S., Canada and international) box office to become the highest-grossing film of all time.

Avatar has reached $1,858,866,889 while Titanic earned $1,843,201,268 total.

The theatrical run of Avatar continues in 122 countries around the world on over 16,000 screens with 72% of the box office, or $1.35 billion, coming from 3D screens thus far.

The domestic (U.S. and Canada) total now stands at $554,981,691, which still trails Titanic‘s $600,788,188, but probably not for long. Internationally (outside of US and Canada), the film has reached $1,303,885,198 compared to Titanic‘s $1,242,413,080.

“We are deeply gratified that so many millions of people around the globe have embraced ‘Avatar,’” said Fox in a statement. “Its success results from the efforts of literally thousands of people, who, over the course of several years, worked to bring James Cameron’s vision of Pandora to life. The themes of protecting the environment, respecting life, and yearning for a peaceful planet have united moviegoers worldwide. We’re very proud of, and grateful to, James Cameron, his amazing and dedicated team, and all the many people at Fox, who worked so long and so hard to achieve this milestone.”

Remember, it took Titanic its entire run (which was almost an entire 10 months) to obtain the 1.8 billion in world wide ticket sales. Its taken Avatar less then 40 to do just that…crazy!

The 100 Cheesiest Film Quotes?

Monday, January 25th, 2010

I didn’t get a chance to watch the whole ten minute video (that’s what I get for stealing my wireless internet from one of my neighbors…I don’t get a chance to watch videos quickly…) but I figured I post something as amazing as this on here. From darkhorizons.com:

The 100 Cheesiest Film Quotes?

The 100 Cheesiest Film Quotes?
Don’t know if I’d agree that these are the 100 ‘cheesiest’ movie quotes of all time, but this video montage I found on the brilliant Sasha Stone’s Awards Daily site brought back some great memories of film lines so legendarily campy or silly that many have entered the pop culture lexicon.

There’s the obvious suspects from Arnie’s numerous puns, J-Lo’s turkey vagina reference in “Gigli”, Anakin in the “Star Wars” prequels, Stallone in “Judge Dredd”, Nic Cage in “Wicker Man”, and the immortal “Showgirls” tease “Must be weird not having anyone cum on ya”. What’s surprising is a healthy mix of great films in here too (including a few award winners).

New Ghostbusters and Gremlins movies to be in 3D

Monday, January 25th, 2010

I have absolutely no problem with this, as long as its not annoying. I hate seeing movies after they are out of the movie theater and after the glasses come off and you still have to deal with the crap that gets thrown at the screen in order to utilize the 3D aspect of the film. I haven’t seen Avatar yet, but I’ve heard it isn’t annoying and that it was used the way that 3D should be used.

This one is from darkhorizons.com:

3D “Gremlins,” “Ghostbusters” In The Works

3D "Gremlins," "Ghostbusters" In The Works
80′s cult film staples “Gremlins” and “Ghostbusters” are both looking to get new 3D sequels.

First up MarketSaw reports that a third “Gremlins” film is in the works and will be shot in 3D. The project is a brand new film rather than a 3D retrofit of the original but as it’s so early there’s no word on who will be penning the script.

The same site also says the previously reported on third “Ghostbusters” film is proceeding as planned, but with 3D now added into the mix.

Lee Eisneberg and Gene Stupnitsky are penning the script.

Elementary Memories

Monday, January 25th, 2010

Recently I found a friend of mine from Elementary School on Facebook, Tad, and we’ve spoken briefly here or there. Today, Melissa calls me, laughing, and asking me about a picture I was tagged in. My first thought is: “What was I wearing?”

Avatar passes The Dark Knight domestically and is narrowing in on Titanic

Sunday, January 24th, 2010

Something I didn’t think I’d see for years to come was Titanic possibly being surpassed, but it looks like the only person that would be able to do that would be the man that set the standard that high: James Cameron.

Avatar Passes The Dark Knight Domestically!

The ComingSoon.net Box Office Report has been updated with studio estimates for the weekend. Click here for the full box office estimates of the top 12 films and then check back on Tuesday for the final figures based on actual box office.

For the sixth week straight, the box office is all about James Cameron’s Avatar, as it added another $36 million this weekend to set a new record for a movie’s sixth weekend gross. More importantly, it has now grossed $552.8 million domestically, making it the second-highest grossing movie domestically, passing The Dark Knight‘s $533.3 million over the weekend and putting it in sight to cross Titanic‘s long-standing record of $600.8 million sometime next month. Internationally, Avatar earned $107 million this weekend to push its overseas total to a massive $1.28 billion, surpassing Titanic‘s previous international record of $1.24 billion. Worldwide, the film has collected $1.836 billion and is about to surpass Titanic‘s global record of $1.843 billion.

The Screen Gems action-thriller Legion, starring Paul Bettany, Dennis Quaid and Tyrese Gibson, opened solidly in second place with $18.2 million in 2,476 theaters, averaging over $7,000 per site.

Warner Bros. Pictures’ The Book of Eli (Warner Bros.) dropped to third place $17 million in its second weekend, down 48% from the holiday weekend with a gross of $62 million.

Opening at #4, 20th Century Fox’s new family comedy Tooth Fairy, starring Dwayne Johnson, grossed roughly $14.5 million in its first weekend in 3,344 theaters.

In fifth place, Peter Jackson’s adaptation of The Lovely Bones (Paramount) dropped 48% from its first wide release weekend, adding another $8.8 million to its total gross of $31.7 million.

Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes (Warner Bros.) dropped one notch to sixth with another $7.1 million and $191.6 million after five weeks in theaters, putting it well ahead of its $90 million production budget.

Despite the star power of Harrison Ford and Brendan Fraser, the first release from CBS films, the medical drama Extraordinary Measures opened with a disappointing $7 million in 2,549 theaters, averaging less than $3,000 per site.

Fox’s Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel dropped to eighth place with $6.5 million and a grand total of $204 million in five weeks. That puts it roughly $13 million away from the total North American gross for its predecessor. (Internationally, the “squeakquel” has already surpassed that of the original comedy.)

Nancy Meyers’ romantic comedy It’s Complicated (Universal), starring Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin, took ninth place with $6.2 million as it edged closer to $100 million, while Jackie Chan’s The Spy Next Door (Lionsgate) took a 51% dive to take tenth place with $4.7 million and $18.7 million total.

Haven’t seen Avatar yet, but probably will real soon.

Sirius Satellite Radio

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

So, for Christmas 09, my parents got me a Sirius Satellite Radio (AKA: my “new” sneakers) and I finally had it installed in my car. I got all the music channels and Howard Stern and I got a chance to listen to the tail end of the repeated Howard show from today and it brought back memories of when I used to listen. Robin was going over the news toward the end and they always play interview clips and they were discussing Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson who is acting in The Tooth Fairy. It felt like slipping on an old pair of shoes…I will be enjoying this for a while to come…

I did want to get the station that Opie & Anthony are on, but that meant adding “The Best of XM” and that cost $4 more dollars and its just not that important right now…maybe if they allow ordering just one station and not the whole package I’ll reconsider getting the O&A station. Sorry guys, but for now I’m going with Howard again…

2 Spider-Man updates: New Director included

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

Back! Went to Las Vegas for an extended weekend. I’ll try and post some pictures in the coming days. Didn’t win money or anything…at least anything substantial….anyway, here is some updates about the Spider-Man reboot, that I’m still not happy about. Both of these are from Darkhorizons.com:

Marc Webb Set For “Spider-Man” Reboot

By Garth Franklin
Wednesday January 20th 2010 01:37AM
Marc Webb Set For "Spider-Man" Reboot It’s official, “(500) Days of Summer” director Marc Webb will direct the next chapter in the “Spider-Man” franchise for Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios.

Written by James Vanderbilt, Webb will work closely with producers Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin in developing the project which will begin production later this year for release in Summer 2012.

In an official press release, Webb says “This is a dream come true and I couldn’t be more aware of the challenge, responsibility, or opportunity. Sam Raimi’s virtuoso rendering of Spider-Man is a humbling precedent to follow and build upon. The first three films are beloved for good reason. But I think the Spider-Man mythology transcends not only generations but directors as well. I am signing on not to ‘take over’ from Sam. That would be impossible. Not to mention arrogant. I’m here because there’s an opportunity for ideas, stories, and histories that will add a new dimension, canvas, and creative voice to Spider-Man.”

We currently have “(500) Days of Summer” at home from Netflix, so I’ll check it out, but I don’t know if it will show whether or not Marc Webb (which is, by the way, a great name for someone working on a Spider-Man film) can handle effects work. But this next update might explain that there might not be as much effects work on this next film.

“Spider-Man” Reboot Slaps On The Clearasil

By Garth Franklin Wednesday January 20th 2010 12:00PM
"Spider-Man" Reboot Slaps On The ClearasilWith Marc Webb now officially signed on to direct the “Spider-Man” reboot, further details have begun to emerge about Sony’s new plans for the webslinger franchise reports Risky Biz Blog.

First up forget every casting rumor you’ve heard, getting the director locked down was the first priority and now that he’s there, only now are attentions being turned to casting the Marvel superhero. Webb himself is only signed on for one but with an option for at least two more.

The biggest surprise is the budget. The initial production estimates have the budget standing at a very modest $80 million. To give you a comparison, Raimi’s first “Spider-Man” in 2002 cost $140 million while the third film cost $260 million.

How in the hell can they keep the cost down? The cast will be relative unknowns, while the storyline will not be based on the classic comics of the 60′s which Raimi used but rather the recent “Ultimate Spider-Man” run by Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Bagley.

That series was as much about high school angst as saving the world. The villains are likely to be adapted to better fit that environment, while the character progression will likely be a lot slower to allow the studio to spread things across more sequels.

Heard about this today, I was never a huge fan of the series, but I’m not really happy about this decision…

Sony Rebooting Spider-Man in 2012!

Source:Sony Pictures
January 11, 2010
Peter Parker is going back to high school when the next Spider-Man hits theaters in the summer of 2012.

Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios announced today they are moving forward with a film based on a script by James Vanderbilt that focuses on a teenager grappling with both contemporary human problems and amazing super-human crises.

The new chapter in the “Spider-Man” franchise produced by Columbia, Marvel Studios and Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin, will have a new cast and filmmaking team. Spider-Man 4 was to have been released in 2011, but had not yet gone into production.

“A decade ago we set out on this journey with Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire and together we made three ‘Spider-Man’ films that set a new bar for the genre. When we began, no one ever imagined that we would make history at the box-office and now we have a rare opportunity to make history once again with this franchise. Peter Parker as an ordinary young adult grappling with extraordinary powers has always been the foundation that has made this character so timeless and compelling for generations of fans. We’re very excited about the creative possibilities that come from returning to Peter’s roots and we look forward to working once again with Marvel Studios, Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin on this new beginning,” said Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment.

“Working on the ‘Spider-Man’ movies was the experience of a lifetime for me. While we were looking forward to doing a fourth one together, the studio and Marvel have a unique opportunity to take the franchise in a new direction, and I know they will do a terrific job,” said Sam Raimi.

“We have had a once-in-a-lifetime collaboration and friendship with Sam and Tobey and they have given us their best for the better part of the last decade. This is a bittersweet moment for us because while it is hard to imagine Spider-Man in anyone else’s hands, I know that this was a day that was inevitable,” said Matt Tolmach, president of Columbia Pictures, who has served as the studio’s chief production executive since the beginning of the franchise. “Now everything begins anew, and that’s got us all tremendously excited about what comes next. Under the continuing supervision of Avi and Laura, we have a clear vision for the future of Spider-Man and can’t wait to share this exciting new direction with audiences in 2012.”

“‘Spider-Man’ will always be an important franchise for Sony Pictures and a fresh start like this is a responsibility that we all take very seriously,” said Michael Lynton, Chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures. “We have always believed that story comes first and story guides the direction of these films and as we move onto the next chapter, we will stay true to that principle and will do so with the highest respect for the source material and the fans and moviegoers who deserve nothing but the best when it comes to bringing these stories and characters to life on the big screen.”

The studio will have more news about Spider-Man in 2012 in the coming weeks as it prepares for production of the film.
